Can I Raise the Flap Height for a Taller Pet? – Mesh Patio Pet Door

Modified on Thu, 9 Jul at 9:28 AM

Short Answer

Yes. The Mesh Patio Pet Door can be fitted with up to two optional Bottom Risers, each raising the Top of Flap Opening by 75 mm (3").

This provides additional clearance for taller pets and can make entering and exiting the pet door more comfortable.

Why Would I Use Bottom Risers?

Some taller pets may benefit from additional clearance when passing through the pet door.

Each Bottom Riser raises the Top of Flap Opening by 75 mm (3"), providing more clearance for taller pets.

Bottom Risers also:

  • Increase the Step-Over Measurement.
  • Increase the overall installed height of the Mesh Patio Pet Door.

This can make the pet door more comfortable for larger breeds by reducing how much they need to crouch when entering and exiting.

Top of Flap Opening (C)

These measurements show the distance from the floor to the top of the flap opening. Compare them with your pet's back height to determine whether Bottom Risers may provide additional clearance.

Step-Over Measurement (S)

The Step-Over Measurement is the height your pet steps over to enter the flap.

The Step-Over Measurement for each configuration is shown in the tables above alongside the Top of Flap Opening.

How Do I Know If My Pet Needs Bottom Risers?

Measure your pet from the floor to the highest point of their back while standing naturally.

Compare your pet's back height with the Top of Flap Opening (C) measurements shown above.

While Bottom Risers increase the available clearance, they also increase the Step-Over Measurement (S), so your pet must still be able to comfortably step over the bottom frame.

How Many Bottom Risers Can I Use?

You can install:

  • Up to 2 Bottom Risers on a single Mesh Patio Pet Door.

Each Bottom Riser:

  • Raises the Top of Flap Opening by 75 mm (3").
  • Increases the Step-Over Measurement.
  • Increases the overall installed height of the Mesh Patio Pet Door by 75 mm (3").

Important Considerations

  • Bottom Risers are designed to improve clearance for taller pets. While they also increase the overall installed height of the Mesh Patio Pet Door, they should not be used as a substitute for Top Extensions when increasing the height range for taller sliding door openings.
  • If you are also using Top Extensions, remember that Bottom Risers increase the overall installed height by 75 mm (3") each.
  • Consider any steps or changes in floor level that may affect how comfortably your pet can use the door.

Because every pet is different, customers should compare their pet's measurements with both the Top of Flap Opening and Step-Over Measurement before purchasing.
