Not sure how to help your pet start using their new pet door? With a little patience and positive reinforcement, most pets can learn quickly!
Before You Begin
Figure out what motivates your pet more — going outside or coming inside. If your pet loves the outdoors, begin training from inside, moving out (and vice versa).
Training Steps
Step 1: One-Way Practice
Start with the flap held fully open.
TIP: Use a piece of tape or a prop to hold the flap open or halfway ajar. For nervous pets, consider removing the flap temporarily (if possible) until they’re confident with the doorway.
Stand on the opposite side with treats or a toy.
Shake or show the reward to get your pet’s attention.
Encourage them to pass all the way through. Only give the treat when they do.
Praise progress, but keep sessions short and stop if your pet becomes hesitant.
Step 2: Two-Way Practice
Repeat the process, but now practice from both sides of the door.
Keep sessions short and positive.
Always reward full passage.
Step 3: Gradual Flap Lowering
Lower the flap so it’s only partially open.
This helps your pet get used to the flap touching them.
Offer encouragement if they seem unsure.
Reward full, successful passes.
Step 4: Decrease Assistance
Lower the flap a bit more each session.
Your goal is to have your pet push through on their own.
Continue using treats and praise as needed.
Step 5: Independent Use
Now it’s time for full independence!
Place treats or toys on the other side of the door.
Reduce verbal encouragement.
Keep practicing until your pet confidently uses the door on their own.
Pro Tips
Be patient! All pets learn at their own pace.
Use high-value rewards your pet loves.
Keep sessions short, fun, and stress-free.
