How Does the Glass Patio Pet Door Lock?

Modified on Thu, 5 Mar at 11:48 AM

Short Answer

The Hakuna Pets Glass Patio Pet Door can be locked using your existing sliding door lock when installed with the included frame brackets.

If you cannot drill into the door frame, a Sliding Door Bar Lock (sold separately) can be used as a no-drill locking option.

There are two main locking options depending on how the pet door is installed. The locking method depends on whether the pet door is installed using the frame brackets or as a no-drill installation.

Locking Options

Option 1: No-Drill Locking (Temporary Installation)

If you cannot drill into your sliding door frame, you can use a Sliding Door Bar Lock.

Sliding Door Bar Lock (sold separately)

  • Locks the sliding door against the pet door

  • Does not require screws or drilling

  • Ideal for renters or installations where the pet door needs to be removed regularly

  • Installs in the sliding door track to prevent the sliding door from opening further.

This option provides a simple and removable locking solution.

Option 2: Secure Locking (Frame Bracket Installation)

For the most secure setup, the Glass Patio Pet Door should be anchored to the sliding door frame using the included Frame Bracket Pack.

This installation method secures the pet door to the frame and allows the door’s locking systems to function correctly. The installation manual shows how the brackets are drilled into the sliding door frame and fastened to the pet door for a secure installation.

Once installed, you can use your door’s internal and/or external locking mechanisms.

Internal Lock Option

If your sliding door has an internal hook-style lock, it can typically be reinstalled directly onto the pet door frame.

This allows the sliding door to lock internally against the pet door after installation.

External Lock Option

If your sliding door has an external lock or handle, you can relocate the catch using the included Lock Bracket Pack.

This bracket attaches to the pet door frame so the external lock can still engage normally.

Important: Your sliding door must have locking hardware that installs perpendicular to the door frame (screws fasten toward the pet door frame).

Doors with clamp-style handles are not compatible with this locking method.

Important Considerations

  • The Glass Patio Pet Door must be secured to the frame using the included brackets for the built-in locking options to work correctly.

  • If you cannot drill into the frame, you should use a Sliding Door Bar Lock instead.

  • The Glass Patio Pet Door is not a security door.

  • Customers are responsible for ensuring their sliding door is properly locked after installation.

Because sliding door designs vary between homes, customers should always check their door hardware and confirm compatibility before purchasing.

Helpful Tip

For the most secure installation, we recommend installing the frame brackets and using your existing sliding door locks with the pet door frame.
