How Does the Glass Patio Pet Door Lock?

Modified on Thu, 26 Mar at 1:04 PM

Short Answer

The Glass Patio Pet Door can be used without drilling (temporary install) or secured for full locking (using included brackets). You can also use a Sliding Door Bar Lock or timber dowel as a simple no-drill locking option.

How Locking Works

The Glass Patio Pet Door doesn’t replace your sliding door lock — it works with your existing door setup or an alternative locking method.

You have two main options, depending on how you want to install it.

Option 1: Temporary Install (No-Drill)

You can install the pet door without any screws.

  • The top section is spring-loaded, holding the pet door in place inside the track

  • No permanent changes required

This is ideal if:

  • You are renting

  • You want to remove the pet door regularly

Locking Options (No-Drill)

To lock your sliding door in this setup, you can use:

  • Sliding Door Bar Lock (sold separately)

  • Timber dowel (DIY option) placed in the track

The installation manual confirms this temporary setup is designed for situations where drilling is not possible.

Option 2: Secure Install (Recommended for Long-Term Use)

For a more secure and permanent setup, the pet door can be fixed in place.

This uses the included:

  • Frame Bracket Pack – secures the pet door to the door frame or panel

  • Lock Bracket Pack – allows your existing lock to be repositioned if needed

Once installed:

  • Your sliding door can lock directly against the pet door

  • The pet door is firmly held in place with minimal movement

The manual describes this as a secure install for long-term use and improved stability.

Internal vs External Locks

Depending on your door, your lock may be:

Internal Lock (inside the frame)

  • The locking latch is removed and reinstalled onto the pet door

External Lock (handle or catch)

  • The lock is repositioned using the Lock Bracket Pack

Both methods are supported and shown in the installation manual.

Important Considerations

  • The Glass Patio Pet Door is not a security door

  • For the most secure setup, use the Frame Bracket Pack or a Bar Lock

  • If not secured, the pet door relies on the spring fit and track pressure only

  • Lock compatibility depends on your existing sliding door hardware

Because every sliding door setup is different, customers should always confirm how they plan to lock their door before purchasing.

Helpful Tip

If you’re unsure which option to use:

  • Choose temporary install for flexibility

  • Choose secure install if you want your door to lock like normal
