How Does the Glass Patio Pet Door Lock?

Modified on Fri, 5 Jun at 4:12 PM

Short Answer

The Glass Patio Pet Door can be installed as either a temporary or semi-permanent solution.

For semi-permanent installations, many standard sliding door locks can be adapted using the included locking hardware, allowing the sliding door to lock against the pet door. For customers who cannot drill into their door frame, a Sliding Door Bar Lock is available separately as a no-drill locking option.

How Locking Works

The Glass Patio Pet Door does not include its own door lock. Instead, it can either work with your existing sliding door lock or be secured using a separate locking solution such as a Sliding Door Bar Lock

You have two main options, depending on how you want to install it.

Option 1: Temporary Install (No-Drill)

You can install the pet door without any screws.

  • The top section is spring-loaded, holding the pet door in place inside the track

  • No permanent changes required

This is ideal if:

  • You are renting

  • You want to remove the pet door regularly

Locking Options (No-Drill)

To lock your sliding door in this setup, you can use:

  • Sliding Door Bar Lock (sold separately)

  • Timber dowel (DIY option) placed in the track

This option is popular with renters and customers who want a removable installation.

Option 2: Secure Install (Recommended for Long-Term Use)

For a more secure and permanent setup, the pet door can be fixed in place.

This uses the included:

  • Frame Bracket Pack – secures the pet door to the door frame or panel

  • Lock Bracket Pack – allows your existing lock to be repositioned if needed

Once installed:

  • Your sliding door can lock against the pet door
  • The pet door is secured to the frame or mounting surface
  • Movement and gaps are reduced compared to a temporary installation

Internal vs External Locks

Depending on your door, your lock may be:

Internal Lock (inside the frame)

  • The locking latch is removed and reinstalled onto the pet door

External Lock (handle or catch)

  • The lock is repositioned using the Lock Bracket Pack

Depending on your existing door hardware, either method may be suitable.

Important Considerations

  • The Glass Patio Pet Door is not a security door

  • For the most secure setup, the sliding door should be locked using either a compatible existing lock or a Sliding Door Bar Lock.

  • If not secured, the pet door relies on the spring fit and track pressure only

  • Lock compatibility depends on your existing sliding door hardware

Because every sliding door setup is different, customers should always confirm how they plan to lock their door before purchasing.

Helpful Tip

If you’re unsure which option to use:

  • Choose temporary install for flexibility

  • Choose secure install if you want your door to lock like normal
