Glass Patio - Installation - Is My Sliding Glass Door Suitable?

Modified on Wed, 28 May at 1:57 PM

Before installing a Glass Patio Pet Door, it's important to assess whether your sliding glass door is compatible. This guide will walk you through the key considerations:

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Locking Hardware

1. Check Your Existing Handle and Lock:

Examine the type of handle and lock installed on your sliding door. In some cases, internal locking hardware within the door track may obstruct the proper installation of the pet door.

2. Removing Obstructing Hardware:

If such hardware is present, you may need to remove it to allow the pet door to fit. This hardware is usually secured with screws, which can be unscrewed to remove the components.

3. Consider Security Implications:

Removing the locking hardware may prevent you from securing your sliding door. It's important to weigh this before proceeding.

Tip: Use a Sliding Door Bar Lock as an alternative security solution. It's easy to install and allows you to keep your door secure without relying on the original lock.

Included Locking Hardware Compatibility

The Glass Patio Pet Door comes with locking hardware suitable for the following handle types:

Compatible: Single & Double Hook Type

Included Damage Free Locking Hardware

The locking hardware included with the Glass Patio Pet Door is intended for use with Single or Double Hook Type Door Hardware.

Incompatible: Internal Locking Mechanisms & Clamp-Type Locks

Included Permanent Door Locking Hardware

Permanent Locking Hardware can be used with most doors, however it does require drilling into your sliding door and door frame.

Door Track Compatibility

Your door track must be clear of obstructive locking hardware and wide enough to accommodate the pet door frame. Some sliding door designs (especially older or custom models) may not be suitable.

Compatible Door Types

  • Standard Single Sliding Doors – Recommended

  • Double Sliding Doors – Not Recommended
Requires one door to be permanently fixed in place, limiting access.

  • Bifold or Stacking Sliding Doors – Not Recommended
These create gaps and lack proper sealing when a pet door is installed.
