Paw Proof - General - Why is there a minimum pet size/weight?

The Paw Proof Retractable Gate is recommended for small to medium-sized pets weighing between 4.5kg – 18kg (10–40 lbs). This guideline is based on product safety testing and is important for both pet safety and gate performance.

The gate should be installed as close to the ground as possible, with no more than a 7.5cm (3") gap between the bottom of the gate and the floor.

Here's why the weight/size minimum matters:

Preventing Escapes

Smaller or lighter pets may be able to squeeze under or push through flexible parts of the gate - particularly at the base or edges. Since retractable gates are made from mesh or fabric, they're not as rigid as traditional barriers, making it easier for undersized pets to find weak spots.

Reducing Entrapment Risks

Very small pets may get caught under or along the sides of the gate. If they panic, this could lead to injury or property damage. The recommended size helps ensure your pet is heavy and tall enough to stay safely contained without risk of slipping through or getting stuck.

Tip: Retractable gates work great for well-behaved pets, but they’re not recommended for persistent escape artists. If your dog loves testing boundaries, the PVC mesh can stretch and weaken over time with repeated pressure.
