Paw Proof - General - How Do I Measure My Space for a Retractable Gate?

Modified on Tue, 3 Jun at 10:28 AM

Getting accurate measurements is key to making sure your retractable gate fits and functions properly. Here’s how to measure depending on your installation area - whether you're mounting inside or outside a doorway or opening.

Skirting / Baseboards

Most homes have some form of skirting or baseboards, and these can affect how your gate fits. The Retractable Gate comes with three (3) 5mm (3/16") spacers to help align the Upper Gate Mount and Upper Catch Mount when baseboards are present.

  • If your baseboards are wider than 15mm (19/32"), you may need additional spacers.

  • Always measure the width of your baseboards to determine if the included spacers are enough.

Tip: If your baseboards are curved or decorative, measure the flattest, thickest part.

Installing Inside a Doorway or Opening

  • Measure the widest point inside the opening.

  • Take multiple measurements along the height (top, middle, bottom) to ensure accuracy.

  • If there are baseboards, measure just above them to get the clearest width.

  • Add at least 50mm (2") to your measurement so the gate can extend fully and latch comfortably.

Installing Outside a Doorway or Opening

  • Start by measuring the inside width of the opening.

  • Then, add 60mm (2.4") on each side to allow space for the Gate Assembly and Catch Mount.

NOTE: Example: If your doorway is 900mm wide, your total space required will be approximately 1020mm.

NOTE: Always leave at least 20mm (3/4") between the gate’s Installation Guides and the edge of the opening. This ensures the gate doesn’t overhang and maintains a clean, secure fit.
