Before purchasing and installing your Glass Patio Pet Door, it’s important to ensure it will fit correctly in your existing sliding door setup. Below is a quick guide on how to measure and some helpful things to consider before installation.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
How to Measure Your Sliding Door
To find the correct size, measure the inside of your sliding door track — from the top of the inside track to the bottom of the inside track.
Tip: It’s important to measure within the track itself, not just the door frame. The Glass Patio Pet Door is designed to sit snugly inside the track, so measuring from outside edges may result in an incorrect fit.
Other Things to Consider Before Installing a Patio Pet Door
While measurements are key, here are a few other factors to keep in mind:
1. Track Compatibility
Most patio pet doors are designed to fit standard sliding door tracks, but if you have a non-standard or unusually narrow/wide track, it’s worth double-checking.
Look at how the door currently slides — some very old or uniquely designed frames might not support a panel insert.

2. Locking & Security
Adding a pet door panel means your sliding door won’t close all the way to the frame unless modifications are made.
You may need to use a bracket lock or security bar to keep your sliding door secure. The Glass Patio Pet Door includes two standard locking options and also supports an optional security bar accessory, available for separate purchase.
We recommend reviewing our Glass Patio Pet Door - Installation - What Locking Options Are Available article to understand how your sliding door can be secured with your pet door installed.
Some customers also use track locks or pin locks as an extra safety precaution.
3. Screen Doors
If you have a sliding screen door, take note of how it operates. In many setups, the Glass Patio Pet Door sits in the glass door track, which may limit or block the ability to fully close your screen door from inside your home.
4. Pet Size & Accessibility
Make sure the door size matches your pet’s height and comfort. We recommended checking out our Pet Doors - General - How Do I Measure My Pet For A Pet Door? support article.
Most listings include a flap size guide — be sure to compare this with your pet’s shoulder height. Also consider their belly-to-floor measurement to ensure it's compatible with the step-over height of the Patio Pet Door. Keep in mind that the step-over height increases with larger door sizes with the Glass Patio Pet Door.
