Cat Flap - General - Why Can My Cat Still Get Through the Door When It's Locked?

Modified on Wed, 7 May at 12:31 PM

If your cat is getting through the cat flap even when it's locked, here are a few common reasons why:

1. Lock Not Set Correctly

Sometimes the selector dial doesn’t fully click into the locked position. Double-check that the lock is fully engaged.

2. Cat Manipulating the Flap

Some clever (or persistent!) cats can push, paw, or nudge the flap until it eventually gives way. Even when locked, repeated pressure over time can sometimes weaken the mechanism, allowing them to get through.

3. Access From Outside

If the flap is set to "in-only" mode (allowing pets inside but not out), a determined cat outside may still find ways to pull the flap open - especially if they can hook their claws under the edge or push and catch the bounce with enough force.

What You Can Do:

  • Always make sure the lock is fully engaged when you want to restrict access.

  • For highly determined cats, you may want to consider a Hakuna Pets - Super Tough Pet Door, or Deluxe Aluminimum Pet Door with a heavy-duty locking panel for extra security.
