In most cases, yes, our Retractable Gates can be installed at the top of stairs. However, certain conditions must be met to ensure the installation is safe and secure.
When Top-of-Stairs Installation Is Suitable
To safely install the gate at the top of a staircase, the following conditions must be met:
The gate must always be installed at the top tread level, never below it.
Mounting requirement: Position the gate at least 25 cm / 10" back from the top step tread.
This ensures stability and reduces the risk of falls.
Do not install the gate partway down the stairs. Gates should only be fitted at the top tread or the lowest tread.
Bottom of Stairs
The gate should be installed at the front of the lowest tread.
Mounting requirement: Position the gate at least 2 cm / 0.8" back from the edge.
This placement keeps the gate secure while preventing tripping hazards.
Note: If you cannot meet the minimum installation requirements, we do not recommend using a retractable gate at the top of stairs, as it may pose a safety risk.
Banister Adapter Options for Stair Installations
If you're installing on stairs with banisters, or want to avoid drilling:
Extra Tall Banister Adapter Kit
This adapter is compatible with both square and round banisters. It provides a flat, secure mounting surface and eliminates the need to drill into your banisters — ideal for preserving finishes or in rental properties.
Safety Reminder: Top-of-stairs installations require extra caution. Always double-check that your gate is securely mounted and operates correctly. An improperly installed gate can fail under pressure, especially in high-traffic or high-risk areas like stairs.
