Essential - General - Why Are The Flaps Different Between Sizes?

Modified on Thu, 8 May at 2:59 PM

The Small and Medium Essential Pet Doors feature a flexible clear PVC flap, while the Large size uses a rigid polycarbonate (PC) flap.

This difference in flap material is due to several practical reasons:

  • Durability for Larger Pets
Bigger dogs exert more force when passing through the door. A flexible flap may tear or wear out more quickly, while a rigid flap can better withstand frequent use and impact.

  • Improved Weather Resistance
Large flaps cover a bigger area, so a solid flap helps seal the opening more effectively. This reduces drafts, keeps rain or snow out, and helps maintain indoor temperature.

  • Structural Stability
Flexible materials can sag or warp at larger sizes, which affects performance. A solid flap keeps its shape and continues to close properly over time.

  • Better Usability for Big Pets
Rigid flaps swing more consistently and don’t get stuck as easily. For larger pets, this makes using the door smoother and less awkward.
